I Want

To see the bird swim
The fish fly

The dog mew
The cow bark

Babies walk
Adults crawl

You to call me
Not to pick up

Rainfall
Snow
Sunlight
All at once

See you smile
The glint in it

The rainbow turned
Inside out

Walk naked
No shame

Be there

Assaulting my Sense

Burning; morning, afternoon, evening
Everywhere I pass
Can't avoid it
My clothes are reeked in it
My eyes are smarting
My nose cannot stand it; ask about my lungs
I can feel the thin blanket it has spread on me
Oh my, I'm suffocating
I can't go home again
I am already late
My colleagues will have to bear with me
And I with myself
This is what happens if you happen to pass
Under the nim trees at Korle-Bu; morning, afternoon or evening

Sands of Time

Thought I'd buried it
Buried it all in the sands of time
Till the tides came in
And laid it all bare.

On the eve of GF

It was the eve of Good Friday.

6:30pm:- Communion service at church.

7:08pm:- Still at work.

7:20pm:- Hoping i don't miss the last supper service at church.

7:25pm:- Started packing though the end-of-day process i started is not done. Oh no, just realized i wore pants/trousers to work today. I will need to detour home and change into a skirt. (The minister will not mind the pants/trousers but i wonder whether he will draw the line with taking the Communion wearing pants/trousers, even though, obviously, i am coming from work.) Anyway, not to cause any problems and also have some of the old folks taking me aside and giving me a talk about wearing pants/trousers to partake in the Holy Communion, i will go home and change. Oh my, i will be so late. Hope i don't miss the Communion.

7:32pm:- At the Korle-Bu station. No Chorkor, Korle-Bu, Shalom and Agege vehicles. Boi! what to do?

I join the queue to Korle-Bu. "Thank you, Lord, a vehicle."

7:46pm:- I have never walked so fast. Finally, home! I ask my sister whether she was not coming to church, apparently she had a visitor.

7:50pm:- The slit behind the skirt had inched up ('ati'). Back home again; fortunately i was not far from home.

7:55pm: At the bus stop. No Agege bound vehicle passing by. Everyone at the bus stop is going to Agege. Wahala!!!

8:00pm:- I get on board a Methodist bound vehicle. The walk to church will be longer but i can't wait at the bus stop any longer.

8:05pm:- I get down at Methodist. After crossing the street and taking a few steps later, whack!!! The right sole of my wedge sandal was off!! Hmmmmm. When you want hurry, hurry no go come. Ok, don't panic. I calmly took off the sole and turned my attention to the left sole; I took that off with some difficulty. I now had a flat sandal.

8:20pm:- At church. The choristers are coming down for communion. I quickly move ahead of them. Held out my hands, one on top of the other, and received the Host. Hallelujah!!!

9:30pm:- Back home. My sister's visitor come up to me and says "Belated Merry Christmas." Yeah, thanks dude. My hand is not left empty. Money dey!!! I needed that.

3 Months Into 2010

This is the last day of the month of March in the year 2010. I am reflecting on what I have accomplished in the first quarter of this year, and since I do not make any yearly resolutions, I do not really have  targets to compare what I have accomplished with. The most significant things I have accomplished are predominantly work related; I guess now I have a target for the next quarter: pay more attention to relationships and self without letting work suffer for it.
So this is how it goes (1st Quarter Accomplishments)

  • Starting a new job
  • Creating documents on bespoke software
  • Helping out a friend with marketing her business
  • Mentoring
  • Starting this blog and actually posting (yippee)
  • Making new friends and renewing old ones.
  • Attempting and failing to hook others up, hooking up with others and self (will try harder)
  • Tempted to drop everything and go gallivanting anywhere (on my goodness, the urge is still there)
  • To be continued next quarter....
What have you accomplished? Making any resolutions or accomplished some of or all the resolutions you made? Do tell....

Work Against Integrity

It is difficult to be a person of integrity when situations and people do make it close to impossible for you to be. This is an incident as told by a friend to me about what was happening to someone else my friend knows:
For the purpose of this account, I will call the person, Kojo.
Kojo is a young man, married with a child. He works with an insurance company and though he is paid every month; the lodestone when working as an insurance agent is the commission that is got from a sale. Kojo has lobbied and finally hit it big when his contact in one of the ministries informed him about the opportunity to insure a fleet of vehicles. Kojo was able to successfully make the sale and the commission he was going to get on it is GHc 1900. Guess what? In the end, he is going to take home only GHc 400. Why? Because everyone wants a cut. From the audit to the friend who informed him about the cars; everyone in-between it taking a cut. Apparently, what is going on, which Kojo was not aware of, is that those who give approval for the insurance and those who make sure the check is issued out for the insurance have a cut in the commission of the sales agent. Therefore, what most sales agents do, which our man Kojo was not aware of, is to increase the commission on the insurance being given to the ministry in order that when they 'settle' the middle people, they will still have enough money as their commission. So Kojo, who thought he was doing the right thing by giving the right commission to the ministry, is in the end not going to get his rightly deserved commission because of side-liners. Oh Ghana, when oooo when? The next time what will happen:
  • Kojo will increase the commission he is to give on the insurance, in order to settle the side-liners.
  • Kojo's integrity is compromised
  • Some company somewhere will lose money, which it did not have to.
  • The insurance company will be known for the large commissions they give on their insurance.

We don't need such things in our country, but this is what is happening. People of integrity are short-lived in this 'wo didi wo biabiar wo ho', meaning literally, 'you chop where you are'.

    I Got It All Wrong!!!

It all started when I overheard, (no, I wasn't eavesdropping), a colleague (A) at work telling another colleague (B) that he should not become a 'chrife'. I thought, "why not?". What is wrong about being 'chrife'. Colleague A is a Christian, so why was she telling colleague B not to be. Later, I asked another colleague, what is wrong about being a 'chrife'?, and that was when I was enlightened to its true meaning; a 'chrife' is someone who is a fake Christian. All this while, back in primary, JSS, SSS, college and until recently, I'd always thought a 'chrife' was someone who was 'on fire' for the Lord, but a fake Christian, oh my goodness!. I was dead wrong. This makes me wonder what other slang or cliché meanings I have wrong. 'J-weti' means Jehovah's witness, 'Two-two' means prostitute, 'supi' means homosexual partner, 'poss kaya' means someone who assumes authority which has not been given to the person, 'kokonsa' means gossip. These are the few slangs I can remember. I hope i got their meaning right.
