In The Rain

Hold me in the rain/
Don't let me go/

I will, in the storm/
writerscafe.org
Won't let you go/

Let us shiver with cold/
Enfolded in tangled limbs/
Lost in mind with thought of want, need/

The wetness/
Sense of numbness/
Encased in clinging clothes/

Winding moves, made on badger feet/
Dance with me darling, just dance

Fascination

I find myself looking up
In the direction the sound came from,
The rich baritone of your voice

I am fascinated by you
Try as I can,
I just can't seem to help myself.
I steal coy glances at you
In hope that I might catch your eye.
Are you that oblivious to my glances?

Have you realised?, I can't...
Look directly in your eyes for too long.

There is a tingling in my hands whenever I think of you
I dare hope you feel it too.

I Got Bit

I have been bitten by a create-less critter
Making me dull and translucid
Coupled with thoughts that I have barely two months to write
A pocket-draining certification,
My thoughts are in total disarray
Ahhh!

Guilty for not posting
Guilty for not learning
Guilty for pretending to be learning and posting.
I stand accused and judged by myself.
Yet, don't be surprised,
If I post infrequently when I say I won't awhile.

Thinking, What Ifs

Looking back
Reminiscing
Maybe I shouldn't have let you go
I should allowed you talk me into staying
Then again, maybe not.

She watched you
Crush
Didn't wait to see the burn
Yet I guess somehow you passed that.

So now after walking on half-baked truths,
Hog-washed lies,
Down-right tales,
She comes right back again
Plagued with the same thoughts that drove her away.

What if she had not hooked up with your friend?
Or you with hers?
If you had given yourselves some space
To think things through.
What if your friends had not pried?
All well-intentioned of course.

Years gone,
Hearts have broken, been broken,
Healed, patched, mended,
You remain the only one she wants
Yet
One thing keeps you apart.

The one question that plagues her mind
The matter of beliefs.
What if...

Equality?

Independent
Confused
Woman
Pining away
Refusing to acknowledge
Vulnerability

Liberal
Encouraging
Man
Letting go
Age-old roles, prejudices
Comfortable

Woman longs to be held
Be less strong
Man wants to hold
To be known as strong
To keep safe

Wait for the day
When man and woman agree
Not to be equals
Forget who wrought power
All is fair in love and war?
Forgive
Forget

"The more I hear, the more I fear that might lose each other. Can we skip to part when we come to our senses? Before we go, go too far. Love shouldn't be so hard. Can  we open our hearts, drop our defenses? Find where forgiveness starts. Let's stop where we are and stick to the healing part"- Lyrics from Cece Winans' Healing Part

No Apologies

I love you
I make no apologies for that
Love me or not
Not much of a bother
I refuse to be held like a priced gem
Delicate egg I may be
I am weathering fiery frost

Compact and well-done on the inside
Presenting a facade of fragility
Leave her not on my account
Through the bitter and sweet
She has held you
Whereas I would not

Forget my frail heart
Seek it not
Hard-boiled in lava
Braving seasons of life
Brittle-like look serves it well
Making no apologies for love

So Mi Sa'm (Hold my hands)

Telling you things that bother me
Sharing my joys with you
It wasn't to solicit words of wisdom
Nor have you empathize with me
I just wanted you to
So mi sa'm

Me'nko ja m'akyere
(Don't leave me behind)
It is not because I lack shoulders to cry on;
Yours are strong enough,
You are part of my wholeness.
All you ever need to do is to
So mi sa'm

So mi sa'm
Na hwe m'anim
(Face me)
Ke tsereme se'a wo do me
(Tell me you love me)
Se na' meso mi do wo
(As much as I love you)
So mi sa'm
(Hold me hands)

*This is a first for me in one of the languages spoken in Ghana (Fanti). Forgive me if I have mixed it up with Twi, even though Fanti and Twi are Akan dialects. Enjoy MJ and Akon, Hold My Hand video above.

Natural Death

It died a natural death.
Tell anybody who asks,
It died a natural death.
Not by the fiery battery of anger blows,
The incessant clammering of spear-words,
The sting that leaves you low,
Labouring for breath amid a torrent of tears.
It died a natural death.

How could it not,
When it looks at the rise of a new day with anguish,
Rejoicing that the day before was better than the one before that.

It died a natural death,
While you were counting the clouds,
Refusing to acknowledge the light gleaming through.

It died a natural death,
And you compared sunlight with moonshine.

You dug the hole,
Even as you got a tan.

It shunk a mile,
While you dreamt about gold at the end of rainbows.

Deeply buried, it is.
You play the puppet master,
When there is no puppet.
It died awhile back.
And no one ever knew.

Growing Love

I could grow to love you, you know,
If I overlook you pitiful attempts to manipulate,
The constant waving of faults and slights like filthy rags in my face.

I know I said I love you too,
Well, I do, a teensy weensy little bitsy.
I had to say those words to help you along,
You seem to love saying them,
Though they are no longer uttered.
Why? Did I say it wrong?

I could grow to love you, you know.
If I ignore the fact that you don't see to care about your well-being.
Well, why the heck should I?!
You don't care about the concern I show.

Little tests,
Jabbing thrusts,
Watch where you aim, boyo,
You just might get scratched.

I could love you, you know.
Inspite it all

Many Times What!

How many times can you love without losing yourself?
Get brokenhearted, still persist?

Fragments of your mind,
Fragments of your heart,
Floating about in chart-less-maze askew,
Called to order since life goes on

Delve me the future, Muse,
Hide not your tears, Old Faithful,
Did I die or yet live?
Harboring such pain as this?

Wait For Love

We should have waited
Maybe
To see what will unfurl

We should have waited
Perhaps
Just so we can say we did

We should have waited
Maybe
 For the discipline; you'd say

We should have waited
Perhaps
In obedience to rules then belief

We should have waited
Probably
We wouldn't have swept the guilt under the carpet
Behind a facade of coolness

If we had waited
Perhaps
There would be no suspicion

We did not wait
Maybe
Because we fanned the embers

We would have waited
Except nobody did
Why should we?

We waited
Yes, we did
Despite all

We wait
We are
Anything can happen

I Love You By Force

Guy walks up to a gal standing next to a gutter.

Guy: I have been observing you for quite sometime and I just want to say that I love you.
Gal: (looks up at guy; surprised) What?! (she exclaimed)
Guy: I love you and I want to marry you.
Gal: Ask my Dad (pointing at an elderly man sitting on a chair outside the house; all the while thinking; 'this guy is not serious kraaaa, How can you just walk up to me and say you love me and want to marry me This guy has been watching too many telenovelas')
Guy: I am not joking. I will tell you Dad.
Gal: (thinks; 'How disrespectful can you be? The gall!, tell my dad!') Please don't.
Guy: Why? Are you dating someone?
Gal: Yes, I am.
Guy: That does not matter; too much fish does not spoil the broth. After all, you ain't married to the guy.
Gal: I am not interested; thank you (then walks away)

Guy stands there for a few minutes and goes to sit in his car. He later beckons the gal to come to him. Gal takes her time to finish washing her hands and walks up to guy in car.

Guy: Can I have your number?
Gal: No
Guy: Why not?
Gal: Remind me to give it to you the next time we meet.(but thinking; No way, man!, I don't want you stalking my phone) Bye.

This actually happened to me; though we spoke in Fanti (a Ghanaian dialect). I haven't seen the guy since then and if I do, I bet I won't recognise him.Has this ever happened to you before or have you done this before ?

A Wonderful Discovery; My Special Blend Of Forgetfulness

Off to 3 Matthews we go and I am 7 and a half years old. As usual, we heard the stories about our new class teacher, Ms. Addico, or was it Mrs. Addico?, she was strict, and had her spectacles perched on her nose while peeking over the lenses.

For each new class we got promoted to, we were given a list of books to get before school reopens. The standard text books and stationary appeared, then I noticed a new item; a story book. Just that, a story book; no title, nothing. My parents got me The Dog and the Hognobs (or something like that; I remember a dog and some hog thingy) I won't bore you with the story, but the dog, the farmer and his wife survived, can't say the same about the hognobs though. :)

The first term started in our new class, 3 Matthews (oh, the other class was 3 Marks) with introductions all around. We got the new time table and with it an understanding of why the story book, siesta time had changed to Library time. We exchanged books when we were done with our own. We started writing essays under a new subject, Comprehension. Comprehension was not really my forte in spite my reading of almost all the books the 55 members of the class had brought. At the end of the term, a damming remark from my teacher got me all messed up; spelling is good but comprehension is poor. During the vac, before the start of the second term, a visit from Cecilia, a classmate, changed me forever. Cecilia's elder sister was going to take her to the library everyday until school reopened and she wanted to know if I would like to join them.(of course!) I went to the Ghana Library Board in Accra, and I fell in love.
Oh? What? I fell in love with BOOKS! I have been reading ever since. (Check my handbag when you meet me, I either have a hard book or reading off from my phone) I read anything and everything I could get my hands on, and still do. I visited the library twice a week, taking two books at a time (I was given the extra card because I was visiting the library almost everyday). When I ran out of books in the library (I think I was in junior high then), I was given the books from the Library's book club, even though I was not a member. I was in senior high when I was given the nod to use the adult's library (that is the name we kids gave to the library wing with huge books where only adults visited). My stay there was not long because there were no chairs and I had only one library card as opposed to the two I had at the Children's Library. My best friend then had a card that allowed her to use the private library; you get to take twenty five books at a time and keep it for a month. Guess what? I used it more than she did. I visited the new community library in my neighbour; finished with the books there. The US Embassy library had some pretty serious stuff; there I discovered books on Linux operating system and a whole lot of science stuff. My dad took up membership at the British Council Library (when it still existed) and give me the cards to use; three cards for kid books, three for adult books and another three for movies. I discovered Dr. Who.(Remember Dr. Who?)

One thing I won't forget, that in 3 Matthews, for the first time, I forgot my own birthday.

Next week: 4 Alpha

Next Stop

Occupying my daydreams,
You take over my night visions.

You are not a distraction,
Nor an obsession.

But surely, you have something,
I just can't fathom.

You are meant to be
That much I know.

Well-met, we are.
Where we go next, in our hands.

When The Cold Gets In

Like any ordinary day; this day came with the sun shining through the blinds to wake Mumsy up.
Like all other days, she reluctantly allowed the sun rays to tease her out of bed.
Completing the usual routine of personal hygiene,
She picks her purse to get Hausa koko and koose.
"Kuu, do you want koko and koose?". Silence
"Kuuks?". Deafening silence
Mumsy realises she is alone.
Murmuring under her breath "Typical!, off to work on a weekend. One might think I scare him off"
Grabbing the door keys, she notices a note by the door. She recognises Kuuku's handwriting.
Tearing off the envelope, she reads;
I don't know how it started,
It has got to stop.

Before, you made my day brighter that it seemed.
My waking, and last thoughts were of you.

We wage a battle of wills,
With no victor in sight,
A cold war set in.

Loving you feels like a thing in my past,
A happy memory that I remember with fondness.

I can't remember who threw the gauntlet,
Because it does not matter.
I throw in the towel,
Holding up a white flag.

No more dog-fights,
Fistfights,
Word-blows.

Cease fire,
Beloved,
Cease fire.

*Hause koko: porridge made from milled millet and corn.
*Koose: usually an accompaniment of Hause kooko; it is a mix of millet and some spices made into paste and fried.

Not Enough

Love conquers all,
Reveals all.

Where there is love
We are not reduced,
But consumed.

I love you.
You love me.

Our love is not enough.

@All: I am getting back. This is but a trickle. :)

At First Sight

Did not believe in it,
Till it happened,
You happened.

Because you saw,
Came,
Dared,
Conquered?

I am amazed by you.
Taken over by you.

I believe in
Love at first sight,
Happy-ever afters,
Gold at the end of rainbows,
Fairy godmothers,
Only when you are around.

Come to me.

Leftovers

Original versions of products are held at great value.
Your value as a human being is determined in part by society,
Associations, character.

You are a product,
A by-product of what I left.
You are my leftovers.

Who am I to value/devalue you?
After all, in a recycled world,
I have someone's leftovers too.
:)

And in case you want to get all gangster on me,
I may be someone's leftover.
Now, you can get it twisted.
:)

What We See

The toast of town they were called,
They are a match-made-in-heaven,
The ideal couple,
None was surprised when they announced,
At the end of the festive season they tie the knot.

An idyllic marriage they had,
At least that was what everyone thought.
When she turned up with a black-eye,
Making an excuse; not seeing a door in a blackout,
Much thought was not given to it.
When he attended events, once-too-many times, alone;
Excusing her of having a headache,
Seeing her a day later,
Wrapped in blanket clothes with darkened lenses;
Questions were not asked.

When we close our eyes to what is seen,
Pretending what we think is what is real,
We miss the signs.
An idyllic marriage turned out to be,
Nothing more than a charade-in-tresses,
Masking inadequacies, fears, and tears.
Cat-fights, fist-fights and jaded dreams.

A Day In Your Shoes

What will it be like,
To wear your shoes for a day?
Are they nice comfy Converse,
Killer heels, Loake, boots, flip flops?

A day in your shoes,
Will you have a good day?
Happy, carefree, pretense,
Salt, sloth, sleuth.

How will it smell like?,
Your shoes.
Like feet, death,
Aromatic, odourless.

Should we switch shoes,
Will it be a perfect fit,
Just right,
Tight,
Loose?

A day in your shoes;
Heaven or hell?
